About

on the abandoned heel of my japanese pokemon y playthrough, i've elected to try playing pokemon z-a in japanese for my first playthrough. i figure having a fully fresh experience with no knowledge of the plot will keep things exciting.

History

this is my first mainline game since ultra sun, so i have no familiarity with the real-time battles or open world style. it didn't occur to me until i was putting in the cartridge that real-time battles may not be appropriate for my level of japanese.... perhaps this will improve my speed reading ability (definitely).

i'd been skipping the mainline games for a lack of interest, mostly in favor of other games, but also because of the shifting style of the pokemon franchise.... i couldn't say what it was that drew me back in to take a genuine interest in z-a after so many years of falling out of pokemon. maybe it was only because it was kalos, which i had visited most recently, or maybe it's because it's entirely within a city, which is where i live now. honestly i think chikorita being one of the starters might be part of it. it's so cute....

i think the characters are also a draw for me, being that there are returning ones (emma is all grown up!!!) and i like the look of some of the new ones (naveen has a cool vibe...). i'm really interested to see more of how pokemon characters are depicted in japanese, which i plan to compare to the english version on a future playthrough.
